Summary

Significance: The building represents one of the first 19th century "free libraries" constructed in Massachusetts and was an important public building in Newton from 1870-1991. The original building was designed by prominent Boston architect Alexander R. Esty (1826-1881) who designed several important area churches and public buildings. The original building is an excellent example of Gothic Revival or Victorian Gothic Style architecture, with several later additions.
