North Carolina Route 1314 Bridge, Spanning Toe River, Relief, Mitchell County, NC

Significance: North Carolina Route 1314 Bridge has the unique feature of containing a riveted 159-foot Camelback and a pin-connected 125-foot Pratt. Because of Yancey County's devastating floods, the bridge contains long truss spans that require only one pier in the river to offer an obstruction to water flow. The Camelback has the same proportions and members as a pin-connected Camelback. The presence of the pin-jointed Pratt illustrates experimentation on pushing out the older pin trusses and developing a new version of the riveted truss.
