description

Summary

Significance: The North Santiam River Bridge #02454 is located on the North Santiam Highway within the boundaries of the Willamette National Forest. The bridge was designed in 1937 by the Bureau of Public Roads and built on the Detroit to Santiam Junction segment of Highway 22 in 1938 by the Oregon State Highway Department (now the Department of Transportation). The bridge is comprised of a 68-foot steel deck girder span, an 85-foot center steel deck girder span, and another 68-foot steel deck girder span. The overall length of the bridge is 221 feet. The deck is 24 feet wide and accommodates two travel lanes and is flanked by c. 1950 steel picket balustrades with solid concrete intermediate and end piers. These balustrades are replacements of the original, but are compatible with the original design and execution of the structure. The substructure comprises cast-in-place reinforced concrete bents topped with fixed-end bearing plates at the abutments and expansion plates at each pier. The bridge derives its significance due to its association with Depression-era public works road construction projects.
