Summary

Significance: The house was constructed in 1869 by William Neese, an early German settler and local merchant. He was killed in a struggle with a thief in his store on October 3, 1872. The house was left unfinished. His widow remarried and died January 2, 1885. The estate was sold to George Weyand who sold it to F.G. Cordes. Cordes, also a merchant, finished the house and added many improvements to the estate in 1894. The house was known at the time for the large upstairs ballroom where many local people attended parties and dramatizations...
