description

Summary

Significance: The Old Stone Church was constructed in 1747 to 1749 for the Scotch-Irish Presbyterian congregation led by the Reverend John Craig from its beginnings in 1740 until his death in 1774. The original church building was made of logs and, along with the historic cemetery, was located east of present-day State Route 11 and to the rear of the stone church.

The Old Stone Church was expanded over time, first remodeled in 1855 and then altered with the addition of the transepts and steeple in 1921. The fellowship center, known as John Craig Hall, was built in 1956. Some years later, in 1968, the sanctuary was restored. Changes made at this included the moving of the Moller pipe organ to the balcony and the installation of a high pulpit and sounding board. The Session House was originally on the north side of the church, but it was removed and reconstructed in its current place adjacent to the building.

In addition to the congregation, the Old Stone Church served the student population of Augusta Military Academy until the school closed in 1984.
