P. C. O'Brien Building, 801-813 Prospect Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, OH

Significance: The P. C. O'Brien (Standard Theatre) Building is significant for containing the oldest extant theater in Cleveland. Opened in 1914, the 700-seat Standard Theatre showed silent moving pictures to the accompaniment of a Wurlitzer Theatre Orchestra organ. The building, which once housed a diverse array of merchants, manufacturers, and service industries, is a good example of the Commercial Style. Featuring a simple but handsome pressed-brick facade and substantial mushroom columns, the building is also notable as the work of the Reaugh Construction Company, an important general contractor active in Cleveland during the early twentieth century.
