Paulina Lake IOOF Organization Camp, Deschutes National Forest, La Pine, Deschutes County, OR

description

Summary

Significance: The Paulina Lake Organizational camp is composed of 11 log cabins and a lodge constructed during the Great Depression of the 1930's by members of the Bend Chapter of the International Order of the Odd Fellows (IOOF). Built of native lava rock and pine in a beautiful outdoor setting adjacent to Paulina Lake, the log structures reflect successful amateur craftsmanship and "folk" architecture characteristic of Depression-era buildings in forested environments throughout the Pacific Northwest. Although the buildings have been modified during the past 50 years, the site remains an historical example of the Forest Service's initial attempts to promote outdoor recreation by encouraging private leaseholding in its primary recreation areas.
