Pecos Church (Ruins), Pecos, San Miguel County, NM

description

Summary

Significance: This Mission Church dates from the early 1700's, (probably 1706-1707), built after the Pueblo rebellion on the site of an earlier (1620's) and larger church destroyed during the rebellion. For years following the abandonment of Pecos in 1838 the entire mission complex was systematically robbed of timbers and adobe brick. Reconstruction and stabilization of 1915 and 1939-40 further altered the original structure.
