Significance: The Phillis Wheatley Elementary School located at 2300 Dumaine Street, New Orleans, exemplified International Style educational buildings in the state of Louisiana. Built between 1953 and 1955, the campus consisted of a cantilevered classroom building and a one-story cafeteria. Architect Charles Colbert's innovative design provided access to natural light and ventilation as well as providing a sheltered playspace below.
