Significance: Originally built as a depot for storage of powder and other armaments, during the 20th century Picatinny Arsenal became a leading facility for the research, development and production of munitions. Many of the buildings are separated from each other by wooded areas, swamp, man-made hills and/or barricades because of the volatile nature of the processes or chemicals within.
