By using a polarized light apparatus to take pictures of plastic models of turbine nuts and bolts, Dr. Hetenyi, Hungarian-born research engineer at the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, has discovered how to make this fastening device up to forty per cent stronger. He found that nuts and bolts with broad shoulders and tapered bodies distribute stress on threads more evenly than do ordinary nuts and bolts
