Summary
After two days' preparation, the main Federal assault took place in the early morning of June 3rd against a well-entrenched Confederate army. Federal losses were overwhelming, and by noon Gen. Grant called a halt to the entire attack.
This map depicts the area of Hanover County, Va., that includes Old and New Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, and Bethesda Church in relation to the Chickahominy and Totopotomoy rivers.
