Planters & Merchants Insurance Company, 60 Saint Michael Street, Mobile, Mobile County, AL
Summary
Significance: This structure is a good example of the small office buildings constructed at the end of the nineteenth century. The facade was undoubtedly influenced by Richardson's designs, and this style is unusual in Mobile, where most buildings continued to be derived from "Classical" sources. The Planters and Merchants Insurance Company was built in 1896 to the designs of the active Mobile architect, Rudolph Benz. It is one of the few remaining examples of the Romanesque Revival in Mobile.
