Los Altos, CA: Portola Press, 1996, p. 41, with the accompanying caption: After K Company jumped off near Hottorf, Germany, I followed in the footsteps of Pfc. Joe Esz. Platoons were advancing ahead of us. Joe and I took cover for a minute behind a haystack. Ahead was the final objective. He said, "You know, I could never kill a man. I aim over their heads and hope they surrender."
