Summary
Site contains fog signal house, fog bells & fog whistle house.
Significance: One of only four lighthouses authorized by President Washington, Portland Head Light was the first lighted by the federal government. Although altered in height, it has never been rebuilt. It attracts more than 60,000 visitors a year and is perhaps the best known and most photographed lighthouse on the northeast coast.
