Significance: Heiau were important structures on the Hawaiian landscape, because they served as temples for offerings and sacrifices to the gods. Pu'ukohola Heiau is a significant example of a type of heiau known as the "luakini" class, which was dedicated to war. It is also significant for its association with Kamehameha I, who built this heiau to help his pursuit of unification of the Hawaiian Islands.
