Significance: Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site includes the highly significant Pu'ukohola and Maileikini heaiu and the John Young Homestead site. These structures serve as tangible reminders of the rigid social and religious kapu system that characterized life in the Hawaiian islands until its abolishment in 1819, and the complex societal shift that took place in the Hawaiian islands at the turn of the nineteenth century due to the unification of the Hawaiian islands under King Kamehameha I and increasing Western influences.
