Significance: Along with the Edward Coles House, Enniscorthy, Old Woodville, and Tallwood, Redlands helps provide a look into the history of the Coles family, long-time Virginia residents. Redlands is one of the most notable Federal mansions in Piedmont Virginia. / Redlands, built by Martin Thacker for Robert Carter, and his wife, Mary Eliza Coles of nearby Enniscorthy, was begun ca. 1789 and not completed until 1808. It is one of the most notable Federal mansions in Piedmont Virginia, distinguished by its curving salon and bedchamber walls. Redlands remains in the Carter family, and a remarkable assemblage of portraits and furniture reflects their long tenure.
