description

Summary

Significance: While on passage to Italy in the summer of 1910, Frank Lloyd Wright met and prepared sketches for the house at 509 Shelby Street in Frankfort, KY for Jesse R. Ziegler, a young Presbyterian minister. Wright's Oakpark workshop transformed the sketches into working drawings and construction was begun during the winter of 1910; unsupervised by Wright. Reverend Zieger occupied the house for five years; Mr. and Mrs. James Owen Roberts for 10 years; various tenants for 20 years; and in 1948 the present owner Mr. and Mrs. Weitzel. In 1972 the house was in fair condition with the exterior stucco painted white and woodwork painted dark brown. The back porch on the lower level is screened and an awkward addition has been constructed on the second level.
