Richmond National Cemetery, Rostrum, 1701 Williamsburg Road, Montrose, Henrico County, Virginia
Summary
Significance: It was built in 1888, according to a standard design issued two years earlier by the U.S. Army Office of the Quartermaster General. Octagonal in plan, the 17'-4" diameter rostrum originally consisted of a raised brick platform, with cast- and wrought-iron stairs, railings, columns, and roof framing; the roof was clad with tin panels. The iron work for the rostrum was manufactured by the Champion Iron Fence Company of Kenton, Ohio. The rostrum columns and roof were removed in 1952. More than 30 examples of this style of rostrum were erected in national cemeteries during the late nineteenth century, but a relatively small number survive, and most have been altered like the one in Richmond.
