Route No. 1 Overton-Lake Mead Road, Dikes & Ditches, Between Overton Beach & Park Boundary, Overton, Clark County, NV

description

Summary

Significance: The Route No.1 Overton-Lake Mead Road contributed significantly to National Park Service development of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area beginning in 1938. Dikes and ditches were a critical element of construction of the road, because these features protected the roadway from flooding and erosion caused by rapid water runoff in the desert environment. Some of the dikes and ditches were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1936 as elements of a road from Overton to the Valley of Fire.
