description

Summary

Significance: The Rue Road Bridge has been determined individually eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (SHPO Opinion 1993) as a representative example of the riveted Warren pony truss, a bridge type that was widely constructed throughout New Jersey between the 1880s and 1940s. The bridge is distinguished as being one of only two extant vehicular truss bridges in Middlesex County and is the only remaining pony truss bridge in the county. Of the 68 Warren pony truss bridges which currently exist in New Jersey, the Rue Road Bridge is one of four supported by riveted steel cylinder support piers (caissons).
