Salt Mine Village, Company Store, Avery Island, Iberia Parish, LA

description

Summary

Significance: The most important public structure in the Salt Mine Village was the Company Store. This large, frame structure stands at the north end of the village, at a crossroads between the main road to the mine, the road to Neighborhood "A" - until - 1940 - also the road to the western interior of the island. In 1946, it was a two-story structure containing a post office as well as a store, and was probably a railroad station. Today, the store has only one story. The post office has its own separate building up the main road north of the village. The store still functions as a luncheonette and a convenience store for village residents. Note: (Closed down-December 31, 1989)
Survey number: HABS LA-1220-B
Building/structure dates: ca. 1930 Initial Construction
