Samuel Edward Axson House, 4 Greenhill Street, Charleston, Charleston County, SC

Significance: This house was built ca. 1810 for his own home by Samuel Edward Axson, a master carpenter and builder of Charleston, S.C. His father, Wm. Axson (possibly the master mason who carved his name and Masonic symbols on the brickwork of Pompion Hill Chapel (1763) and St. Stephen's Church (1769) in St. Stephen's Parish, SC) left his son, in his will dated 1800, the land and money expressly to build the house. Samuel E. Axson (d. 1817) was married Feb 21, 1812 to Sarah Ann Palmer and in this house was born Oc4 13, 1813, Rev. I.S.K. Axson, D.D., a Presbyterian minister, whose grandaughter, Ellen Louis Axson (daughter of Rev. S.E. Axson) became the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson.
