Summary

Significance: The wood Craftsman housing designs show a conscious response to popular and regional architectural styles, and to the tropical environment of the site. These houses at Schofield combine some of the refined Craftsman-style details with the single-wall, board-and-batten construction typical in Hawaii. Moreover, the pitched roofs, open courtyard, and large screened areas of the housing allowed the quarters to benefit from the tropical climate. These houses represent the recycling by the Army of the 1917 set of drawings. Like the earlier houses they are based upon, "examples of this style have only been found in Hawaii." ...
