Senator Elihu B. Washburne House, 908 Third Street, Galena, Jo Daviess County, IL

description

Summary

Significance: Begun in 1843 in the Greek Revival style. In 1859, the house was doubled in size with an addition in the rear. The following year, projecting bay windows and a porch were added to the south elevation, and these reflect the Italianate style. In 1968, it was purchased by Illinois. The 2-story brick building with partial basement was initially designed and superintended in construction by its owner, Elihu B. Washburne (1816-1887), attorney, friend, and benefactor of U.S. Grant. Washburne would later serve in Grant's cabinet as Secretary of State and Ambassador to France.
