Shoshone Falls Hydroelectric Project, Reservoir and Dam Complex, North Bank of Snake River, extreme Eastern end of the Shoshone Falls Hydroelectric Project, Tipperary Corner, Jerome County, ID

description

Summary

Significance: The reservoir and dam complex mark the capture point, the beginning, of the the entire Shoshone Falls hydroelectric system. The four dams of the dam complex impound water in the reservoir, allowing for regulation of water flows for consistency of power generation. The dam complex and resulting reservoir are original components of the 1920s era expansion of the Shoshone Falls Hydroelectric Project to meet increasing market demand. Two of the four dams (Nos. 1 and 3) are relatively rare remaining examples of the Ambursen flat slab, hollow core dam design that was introduced into the American West as a cost saving measure during the early 1900s.
