Assumed to have been drawn as a preliminary sketch for the printed map "Historical sketch of the rebellion", published by the U.S. Coast Survey in May 1862.

Accompanied by handwritten letter of transfer from the librarian of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and Labor to Philip Lee Phillips (LC), dated Apr. 24, 1911.
