South Main Street, Block 43 (Commercial Buildings), South Main & Washington Streets, South Norwalk, Fairfield County, CT
Summary
Significance: The buildings of South Main Street as a unit form a very harmonious and decorative street facade, relative to a pedestrian scale and representative of the late 19th century style. Individually the block includes the Rogers & Stevens Building which was originally built in 1875 and represents one of the few remaining richly decorated cast iron facades in all of Connecticut. It is flanked on either side by ornamental brick buildings dating from roughly the same period. Of special significance are the wood cornices and window framing of these masonry buildings.
