description

Summary

Significance: Erected in the period between 1920 and 1923, the Emergency Dam Steam Plant is generally significant as a component of the overall Soo complex. More particularly, the dam facility is important for the role it played in protecting the Davis and Sabin locks from possible inundation and damage from up river (Lake Superior) in the event of a shipping accident or gate malfunction. As such, the Davis-Sabin Emergency Dam and its associated steam plant played an integral role in maintaining navigation on the St. Marys River between Lakes Huron and Superior.
