Summary

Significance: It was the home of Washington Irving, one of America's most renowned 19th century authors. Originally the house was a small 1 1/2 story Dutch house built, according to Irving, in 1656 by the Van Tassel family. Irving purchased the home in 1835 and, assisted by his artist friend, George Harvey, enlarged and remodeled it. A parlor and kitchen wing were added to the rear and decorative features, such as stepped gables and clustered chimneys, transformed the house into a romantic, picturesque dwelling...
