SWEPCO Park, 1600 Patzman Street, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, LA
Summary
Entry 2017 HALS Challenge: Documenting City or Town Parks
Significance: The historic importance of the SWEPCO Park, established in 1969, is rooted in the layers of activity and events that have occurred within the official boundaries of the park, on property immediately adjacent to it, and within the neighborhood that it serves. The history begins during the Civil War, continues in the early twentieth century during the period of regional industrialization, and culminates during the Civil Rights Era of the late 1950s and 1960s. Besides its history being unnoticed, the park's narrative takes on contemporary significance due to intentional neglect by the city.
