Significance: Born a slave, crusading journalist T. Thomas Fortune eventually owned and operated three newspapers which he used to fight against corrupt politicians and for civil rights for blacks and women. During the course of his career, he published over 20 books and articles as well as writing more than 300 editorials in his own newspapers and other. Fortune resided here from 1901-1915.
