Summary

Cover title.
In case.
Preface by Arthur W. Hummel reads: An album on the aborigines in Taiwan (Formosa). With interest in the island of Formosa growing, the arrival of a water-color album on the aboriginal people seems timely. Although of little artistic merit, the album - executed probably by an obscure artisan - depict vividly the conditions of Formosa of about a century ago. There are twelve paintings in this folded album, showing life and customs on the island. The pictures show: 1. boys learning how to pound the grain and boys in school engaging in recitation; 2. putting the roof on a house; 3. sentinel on duty; 4. picking cocoanuts; 5. deer hunting; 6. hunting bisons; 7. crossing the stream; 8. cutting grain; 9. storing grain; 10. catching fish; 11. bathing the child; and 12. planting the taro and riding a cart. Students of sociology and history would find the album a good pictoral study of the island before it was transformed into a modern community.

Created by royal painters at the behest of Emperor Qianlong after the Royal Inspector visited Taiwan in 1744-1747; the album includes 12 scenes of the daily life and customs of the aboriginal people of Formosa, such as agriculture and hunting; the preface in English by Arthur W. Hummel.
