The Bolsheviks were especially hostile to all forms of religious worship. In the town of Kharkov they tortured men before the altar of one church. In another church of the same city they exposed the sacred objects and lined men up in front of them to be shot. In the church of Borki they scalped the priest when he was at his duties and left him in the church to die. This photograph illustrates the destruction they have made upon certain sacred symbols while they were in control of Ekaterinodar. The crosses were torn from the walls and stamped, and crucifixes were broken with axes. These relics of an Ekaterinodar church were presented to Major Dexter, of the Red Cross Unit, that he might take them to America and make known by these possible proofs the irrational hostility of the Bolsheviks to the things which others find sacred
