The High Falls of the Genesee River in Rochester, New York
Summary
Beginning in 1815, a small canal called Brown's Race diverted water from these falls to power mills, around which an entire High Falls neighborhood of factories sprang. The area, which includes a popular footbridge across the river for viewing the falls, is now a gentrified neighborhood of bars, restaurants, and small businesses.
