The Union defenders certificate in support & defense of the government, the Union and the Constitution of the United States against the Great Rebellion

description

Summary

A colorful printed certificate for soldiers serving in the Union Army against the "Great Rebellion." At the top center is a seal with acanthus leaves spreading out from it, framing the title below. Two small military scenes appear in the upper corners. In the upper left is an armed soldier guarding a Union camp, and on the right soldiers charge into battle carrying the American flag. Below, Columbia, holding a large flag and with a bald eagle beside her, points toward a distant shore at right, where a fortress is under bombardment. On the near shore Union troops advance, drawing a caisson and artillery behind them.

The Library's impression of the certificate was deposited for copyright on December 30, 1863.
Published in: American political prints, 1766-1876 / Bernard F. Reilly. Boston : G.K. Hall, 1991, entry 1863-16.
