Provenance: Arthur F. Hill, London, Nov. 1935.
This is a modern photographic print of a miniature painting. Given the 1800 date that appears on the miniature at the lower left, this must be Thomas Cahusac, junior, a wind instrument maker, born in 1756, who was active in London from about 1780-1814. It was Thomas junior who married the daughter of Benjamin Banks in 1780. Thomas Cahusac, senior, was born in 1714 and died 18 May 1798. He was a wind instrument maker and maker of other musical instruments. He and his sons, Thomas junior, and William Maurice, were in partnership on the Strand from about 1794. After the father's death in 1798, the sons continued in partnership until about 1800 when the partnership was dissolved (per Langwill). Thus, the typed inscription on the verso of the photograph seems to combine the biographies of Thomas Cahusac senior and Thomas Cahusac junior.
Condition: Good condition.
