Toluca Overpass, Spanning Burlington Northern Railroad on Old U.S. Highways 87 & 212, Hardin, Big Horn County, MT

description

Summary

Significance: The Toluca Overpass is a reinforced concrete T-beam structure that was constructed as part of a Federal program to construct railroad overpasses at hazardous high traffic at-grade railroad crossings on Federal Aid highways. This structure was one of the first constructed under the National Industrial Recovery Act in Montana. The bridge retains excellent structural integrity, maintains all of the structural features indicative of the style and still serves in its original capacity. The bridge, moreover, retains two reinforced concrete bents of unusual design, but is common to skewed reinforced concrete bridges on the 1930s.
