Significance: One of the largest mining and coking operations in the Connellsville Coke Region, Mammoth No. 1 & 2 had over 500 coke ovens at peak operating periods. Mammoth was the scene of one of the worst mining disasters of the 19th century, when 116 miners were killed in a gas explosion and its aftermath.
