Town of Mount Union, Near U.S. Highway 522, Mount Union, Huntingdon County, PA
Summary
See also HABS PA-5973 for related information.
Significance: For the first half of the 20th century, Mt. Union was a center of refractory brick manufacture. Three brick plants were built early in the century and were soon taken over by the three leading companies in the industry Harbison-Walker Refractories Company, General Refractories Company, and North American Refractories. Each company built company housing but chose different ways of executing it, providing a cross-section of company housing style from a planned, model town suburb to houses scattered on available lots within Mt. Union. Mirroring the decline of the steel and coke industries which they served, the brickyards were all closed by 1990.
