U.S. Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, Naval Housing Area Makalapa, Junior Bachelor Officers' Mess, 43 Makalapa Drive, Pearl City, Honolulu County, HI

description

Summary

Significance: This house is significant as an example of adaptation of a residential building during World War II to another use. It was designed as a house and returned to residential use after the war. During World War II this building was converted to a mess, attached to the Bachelor Officers' Quarters (BOQ) dormitory. The design is notable for the use of new materials and minimal ornamentation, with a traditional overall appearance. The design reflected the need for rapid construction in this period of build-up to and beginning of World War II. This house represents the later work of one of Hawaii's master architects, C. W. Dickey. The building responds well to Hawaii's temperate environment, although its design was also influenced by the factors mentioned above.
