U.S. Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, Small Craft Berthing Wharf, Beckoning Point, northeast side of Waipio Peninsula, Pearl City, Honolulu County, HI
Summary
Significance: On the morning of December 7, 1941, a Japanese midget submarine gained entrance to Pearl Harbor. The USS CURTISS, located northeast of Beckoning Point, sighted the midget submarine and subsequently fired upon, and sank the submarine. The submarine sank in the Ford Island Channel between the USS CURTISS and Ford Island. Wharf S25 was installed in 1943 to provide berthing and maintenance facilities for small craft used in deperming operations. The U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. As a Category 3 structure, it has been determined that Wharf S35 functioned as part of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, but is only of minor importance to the historic character of the National Historic Landmark.
