description

Summary

Significance: Facility No. 3 was built in 1922 near the southern corner of the island, as part of the earliest development of facilities for the Naval Air Station at Ford Island. The storehouse has a significant association with the early history of aviation of Ford Island. When the build-up of facilities on the island during the early 1940s forced the relocation and reconstruction of this building, it became a maintenance shop for boats as well as a storehouse. The small boats repaired here were used for transportation of ships' crews and other personnel to and from the island and to and from the moored ships. This function plus the association with the history of the reusing buildings during World War II are significant. The structure is also notable as one of the few remaining examples of riveted construction on Ford Island. It has been evaluated as contributing to the Pearl Harbor National Historic Landmark.
