2002 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: Stonemason Valentine Hoch and his family landed at Indianola in 1846 having purchased land before leaving their native Germany. He purchased land in Dewitt County in 1848, and built the house with help from fellow immigrant Augustus Weig. It remained in the family until the 1890s. It was purchased by Ross Boothe, and underwent restoration in 1954. It passed back to a descendant of the Hoch family in 1998, and was then sold to the Hocheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Company, founded in 1892 by German settlers in the area...
