Villa Montezuma, 1925 K Street, San Diego, San Diego County, CA
Summary
Significance: The "Villa Montezuma" (Shepard House), designed by N.A. Comstock and Carl Trotsche in 1887, exemplifies the high style of living maintained by its flamboyant and eccentric owner, Jesse Shepard. Shepard was a world famous pianist and vocalist, but his most lasting fame has been as an author under the pen name of Francis Grierson. The grandeau of this Victorian extravaganza is emphasized by the unique and varied handling of details which were fashionable in the boom years of the '80's, and through the extensive use of pictorial and patterned colored glass. The house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will be restored to the richness of its heyday.
