Walnut-Dollison Historic District, Gustavus A. Watson House, 515 South Dollison Avenue, Springfield, Greene County, MO

description

Summary

Significance: Built by G.A. Watson in 1921-22, this large frame house is something of an anomaly among the turn-of-the-century speculative houses on South Dollison Avenue. Larger than the adjacent houses and built for a specific tenant, it is notably different from its smaller Late Victorian neighbors. With its off-center gable facade entry, it is the only example of this bungalow sub-type in the study area. The bracketed cornices with decoratively exposed rafter tips and heavily detailed front porch place it within the mainstream of the Arts and Crafts style - a significant house type for the neighborhood. Watson, a prominent Springfield attorney, moved to this house from 836 East Elm around the corner, which he had built in 1896-97.
