Walnut Hill Estate, East Bank of Schuylkill River, Valley Forge, Chester County, PA
Summary
Significance: During the Valley Forge encampment, Dec. 19, 1777-June 19, 1778, the Walnut Hill Estate was owned by Henry Pawling. Located on the east (north) bank of the Schuylkill River, the Pawlins farmland proved a convenient location for commissary stores including cattle, rice, flour, and hogs. The Pawling farmhouse, a mid-18th century structure, was likely used by the commissary department. In the 19th century an impressive Greek Revival addition greatly enlarged this structure.
