description

Summary

Significance: Installed in Washington Water Power Company's (WWPC) Monroe Street Plant in 1903, Generating Units 4 and 5 are believed to be the oldest turbine-generator units still operating in the State of Washington. The two alternating current (AC) generators exemplify technological development of early twentieth century hydroelectric potential and long-distance power transmission. Installation and operation of the generating units dramatically influenced progress and growth of manufacturing and mining in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Generating Units 4 and 5 were determined eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
