Wickiup Dam, Deschutes River, La Pine, Deschutes County, OR

description

Summary

Significance: Wickiup Dam and its related features are significant at the state level for their association with the development of the irrigated agricultural economy that strongly influenced the historic development of Central Oregon. Furthermore, these features are significant for their association with the activities of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation during the early years of the consolidation of irrigation systems in the region. Also, Wickiup Dam was one of the largest construction projects ever to be undertaken with labor provided by the CCC. Finally, Wickiup Dam is one of only two USBR dams that used tube valves, a type of outlet valve that briefly superceded the needle valve models and were seceded by hollow-jet valves. As such, it demonstrates the evolution of valve technology
